The cold shut is the most inexpensive method of repairing or connecting chain. If sized, closed and riveted properly, the nonheat-treated cold shut is stronger than proof coil chain. It is always recommended to use a size larger cold shut for an additional safety factor. Never use for overhead lifting.
(3) Drop forged—heat treated. carbon steel. Clevis pin is carbon steel—heat treated, cotter key is mild steel. Double clevis links join links of grade 30 (proof coil) and grade 43 (high test) chain without welding or peening. May be used to join attachments to grades 30 and 43 chain. Zinc plated.
